Synopsis:
Act 1
Having been exiled with his father for sheltering the Turkish Hovernor, Sandor Barinkay returns to claim his estate. Barinkay's father had been friend and benefactor to a gypsy tribe who acted as guardians of the estate.
Mayor Zsupan, who is a pig breeder and Count Kareska, plot to acquire Turkish treasure hidden in the castle by persuading Barinkay to marry Arletta, Zsupan's daughter. However, Barinkay has fallen in love with Saffi, a gypsy princess, granddaughter of Czipra, the Gypsy Queen.
Act 2
The gypsies assemble for the Romany Wedding of Barinkay and Saffi, in spite of Zsupan and Kareska trying to prevent it. Czipra reveals that Saffi is the child of the Turkish Pasha and her daughter, who married under Romany law. When they fled they entrusted the whereabouts of the treasure to Czipra.
Barinkay makes the treasure over to the gypsies.
Graf Homonoy appears with soldiers. He is recruiting for the war against the Turks. Saffi is taken into custody and the treasure impounded.
Act 3
A victory celebration takes place in the palace at Vienna. Kareska is dismissed and Barinkay is pronounce Gypsy Baron. All are paired satisfactorily.
